Much of Batman: Arkham City passes through open scenarios

Batman: Arkham Asylum was considered the best game based on superhero comics of all history, so, its sequel Arkham City, it has very high standards and expectations through the roof.

To further increase the Hype to the rededor of this game, Rocksteady has revealed that you most of the adventure of Batman: Arkham City takes place in the streets of Gotham, with much larger and more open scenarios that his first delivery.

The interiors are dedicated to specific missions, but 80% of the game takes place in the streets. This means that you can start the game and explore from the very beginning. However, freedom will not have impact on the history, the argument is really important to us.

Rocksteady Studios ensures that the game will not be type sandbox despite freedom of action that we will have at all times. Arkham City will be a very big city full of content relating to the Batman universe that will make your mouth water to more fans of the comic.

Our aim was not to the largest open world only by doing so. We wanted to fill it with content, and there is no better world than the universe's Batman for inspiration. We have 97 people in the team, compared to the 65 of the original. For this reason we have decided that we needed more artists and animators to a wider world. It has been a great technical and creative challenge for the team.

We will know more of the gameplay in Mass Effect 3 in April

Little is known of the latter title that closes one of the best trilogies of the current generation. BioWare is all very quietly and you've revealed almost nothing. We know that the DLC "Arrival" will give us a Union between the end of the second part and this installment, but nothing more.

Fortunately it seems that official Playstation of France and United Kingdom magazines, published new information on the game in the month of April. So I now have to wait, although some rumors say that it will have an interface very similar to that seen in Dead Space.

In any case, Mass Effect 3 will be released at the end of the year and has all the earmarks of becoming one of the best games of the 2011.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ships 2 million worldwide

Eleven years after Marvel vs. Capcom 2, people are still interested in seeing Ryu getting smashed by the Hulk. Capcom announced today that it has shipped two million copies of universe mashup fighter Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds worldwide. Capcom said that the release of MvC3 was "capitalizing on the resurgence of the fighting game boom that began last year" -- you know, the one Capcom started with Street Fighter IV.

These shipments, the company states, zlxo outpace the performance of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. In fact, that game doesn't appear on Capcom's list of million-selling titles at all, suggesting that the sequel outperformed it by a great deal.

Silent Hill composer's guitar auctioned for Japan relief

What's scarier, being absolutely broke or regretting never taking a chance to have a piece of video game history? An auction for Akira Yamaoka's guitar and FX amps, which were used to create the audio atmosphere for a little franchise called Silent Hill, is currently underway on eBay (and will last for five days).

The auction is part of Play for Japan, a coordinated effort to present consumers and gamers with means to help the relief effort in Japan. If you partake, you'll not only feel good about donating money to Japan, but you'll possibly give this guitar a new home and outlook on life, one filled with joy, sunshine and family -- not giant death bunnies and other unspeakable horrors.

Rumor: Warner Bros. joining 'online pass' camp with Mortal Kombat

Warner Bros. may be following in the (very large) footsteps of Electronic Arts and THQ when it comes to discouraging -- or at least profiting from -- the sale of used games. Joystiq has learned from a tipster that when Mortal Kombat hits shelves on April 19, its box will include an "online pass" token that must be redeemed before playing online. At present, WBIE evidently intends to do the same for its high-profile releases F.E.A.R. 3 and Batman: Arkham City. Since the latter won't feature multiplayer, though, the token would have to unlock some other (equally attractive) content.

According to an email obtained from our source, which appears intended for retailers, WBIE won't be promoting the pass -- in fact, no reference to it will appear on the game's packaging. Instead, it is apparently providing retailers with details on the pass, including how to purchase a new one if you're buying a used copy of the game. Unsurprisingly, a new pass will run 800 Microsoft Points / $10 for Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively. We've contacted WBIE for comment on this information. You can find an excerpt from the retailer email past the break.
Mortal Kombat, available on April 19 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, includes a one-time-use registration code that gives players access to all online modes in the game. Players who do not have a code will get a free two-day trial of the online play and then be able to purchase the online modes for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network.

inFamous 2 preview: A tale of two side characters

Sucker Punch isn't interested in subtlety when it comes to inFamous 2, and you needn't look further than the game's two companion conduits, Kuo and Nix, for that to be apparent. In a preview session earlier today, reps from SP walked me through a mission midway through the game wherein Cole fought alongside both characters during separate points -- and like in the first inFamous, he was eventually faced with choosing one side or the other. Only rather than choosing "good" or "bad," Cole had to choose his favorite lady of the two.

When the rep picked Kuo (the "good" side), Nix's reaction was ... less than savory. She seemingly channeled Mass Effect 2's Jack, going from Cole's partner in crime, to a sniveling, vengeance-filled brat in under 30 seconds. After her tantrum subsided, Cole was blessed with the power of ice, borrowed from Kuo. And that's where the demo ended, unfortunately.

BBFC rating suggests Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition coming in June

Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition will apparently make its way to the UK in some form this June. Eurogamer has taken note of the British Board of Film Classification rating, which has the latest version of the fighter dated for June 24.

If the classification is for consoles, it goes against previous statements made by Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono, but would play into cryptic tweets he's made about Arcade Edition DLC. The new version would likely include the four new playable characters: Yun, Yang, Oni and Evil Ryu.

We've contacted Capcom to clarify exactly what's going on here. If the BBFC also classifies arcade machines, the DLC hints and classification could be two separate stories on parallel lines. However, if the classification is for consoles, it's still unclear if the new game will be a DLC code in a new retail box, or if current SSF4 owners will be able to buy it as a DLC expansion. Ono keeps using the term "DLC," so we'd lean toward it being the latter.

Update: Official statement: "Capcom has not made any announcements."

L.A. Noire subject of Tribeca Film Festival special event

the first time ever that a video game has been recognized by the festival" -- you'd think that Rockstar's latest production was a small-budget longshot, competing for necessary distinction amid the eclectic slate of films that will be screened during De Niro and company's annual gathering of international movie makers and moviegoers in the lower Manhattan neighborhood.

Instead, the Team Bondi-developed "cinema-videogame hybrid," as Tribeca Film puts it, will be more of a sideshow -- though no less prestigious. As part of the "Tribeca Talks" special events series, L.A. Noire will be the subject of a one-night-only gameplay demonstration and discussion, featuring Rockstar representatives.

The event will be moderated by Tribeca Enterprises COO Geoff Gilmore, who sounds particularly excited about the film festival's latest discovery. "It's an invention of a new realm of storytelling that is part cinema, part gaming, and a whole new realm of narrative expression, interactivity, and immersion," he heralded in an announcement. "We are poised on the edge of a new frontier." Don't worry, Gilmore, it's safe to step on in -- the games industry has actually been settling this very frontier for decades.

The L.A. Noire event is scheduled for 5:30PM on Monday, April 25 at one of the School of Visual Arts theaters (an official festival venue; though not located in Tribeca). An hour has been set aside for the "live interactive screening" of one of the game's detective cases, plus an additional 45 minutes or so for the Q&A conversation. Tickets will be priced at $25 per attendee (some discounts available) and go on sale to the general public on April 18.

The result, Atlas and P-body, is the robotic duo best suited to overcome the perilous panels and heaps of deathtraps laid out in the Portal 2 co-op campaign. The only problem? They'll have to be controlled by you and a human "friend."

Machinarium headed to PS3 and undecided tablets this year

Developer Amanita Design seems to have its hands full, with a sequel to its adventure game Samorost and two other projects in progress. According to statements from founder Jakub Dvorsky at GameCityNights, the developer is still making time to get Machinarium onto PSN and as-yet-undecided tablets this year. Amanita publicly turned its attention to PS3 last year after Microsoft passed on the point-and-click adventure. There was no word on the previously announced WiiWare version.

Though the iPad seems like the obvious choice of tablet, CasualGaming.biz reports that Amanita is instead "exploring" the Blackberry Playbook, which will be released in North America next month. If only we were privy to an animated thought bubble explaining the process behind that decision.

Capcom confirms Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Capcom has officially confirmed that you'll be able to join Umbrella Corp. in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this winter.

The OXM story had most of the details already: The Umbrella Corp. sends a team (you and up to three friends) to eradicate any evidence of its involvement with the events of Resident Evil 2 in a squad-based shooter developed by Capcom and Vancouver's Slant 6 (SOCOM: Confrontation). There will also be competitive multiplayer, pitting Umbrella against the U.S. Government (which wants to uncover what Umbrella's hiding) -- and both groups must also contend with undead hordes.

Heartbreakingly, it doesn't sound like zombies will be playable, forcing those who like being dead-behind-the-eyes flesh eaters to stick with Left 4 Dead 2 or the new iCarly game.

Revealed the first details of Warhawk 2

Wow! One of the first exclusive multiplayer games of PlayStation 3 could have a sequel on the way. In reality it takes time to circulate rumors of a sequel to Warhawk but it was not until now when it has had access to the first details of this continuation.

Kenshi and Scarlet downloadable characters from Mortal Kombat

At this point everyone you know that the downloadable content is perhaps the most profitable of the editors and almost any game of the current generation has with some type of DLC. It is something that previously did not happen as consoles did not have a PSN online platform or Xbox Live, with the arrival of the Stores has opened the veda, abusive in many cases, and without any sort of regard in the face of the consumer.

Mortal Kombat is almost confirmed that will include to the rededor of 30 selectable characters of launch, a number of really good few titles wrestling match. However, they could have been more since that at least two characters sold us them to part after confirming that Kenshi and Scarlet will arrive as DLC, and that there is still a month for the release of Mortal Kombat 9.

Will not be the only one, also speculated that the mythical Kintaro could also arrive as DLC in the future but still is not confirmed. Whatever, Mortal Komtat looks fucking great and with a very broad roster of wrestlers, pity that, as always, to complete it all we have to scratch the Pocket.

Randy Pitchford explains the delay of Duke Nukem Forever

Yesterday skipped the bad news that Duke Nukem Forever suffered another delay although this time will only have to wait another month. Randy Pitchford, founder of Gearbox, today explained the real reasons for which have not been able to meet the deadline they had planned for their release, a change of date which moves the game's release to June 10.

There is no trap, we thought that date - would be may - when announced it. There is some imprevisiblidad, and we use our experience to predict the time limits. We are not perfect when it comes to say releases, but we are perfect to achieve our goals and to work for them.

I think we could have forced the date of may, but would have introduced risks that would not liked to players who have waited so much and which will finally play Duke Nukem Forever. The continued support of the fans miracles to our moral and guide our quality. It is for the fans that I am confident that this small change in the timetable is good for them.

In the end. I think that a small delay is better in time, to have to rush release deadlines and you find a product poorly optimized and full of bugs. But that should they ask to Treyarch with his Black Ops.

[Analysis] Crysis 2

Crysis 2 is one of the titles more expected this 2011. Not in vain, has a part that has amazed to all kinds of audiences and which became a benchmark of graphical power.

We now have in our hands the second part, and the truth is that with a predecessor as well, the level requiring this title not to disappoint was very high, but Crytek has shown that knows how to make sequels and Crysis 2 becomes an essential game.

So you enter in this analysis to discover everything about the new alien invasion.

If we try to assess Crysis 2 with what we saw in its first issue, which is quite different, but no worse, but that is another air. Crytek has wanted to change the atmosphere of Crysis 2 to create something new but we remember his previous delivery. However, we have gone from a jungle to a huge city like New York. But do not be fooled, New York is going to turn into a jungle, but this time of glass.

The alien invasion attacks New York City.

The game is 3 years later than its predecessor. We are in the year 2023, with an almost completely empty New York City after the evacuation of the population because of the alien invasion. Our protagonist, Alcatraz, is a specialized marine receives the order to reach the city to serve as a support in the fight against the infestation.

But by misfortunes of fate, the vehicle that brought the Marines is destroyed by an alien attack. And without knowing very well how, our protagonist manages to survive and meet with Prophet (known from the first delivery). After a few very moviditos moments, we ended up with the Prophet nanotraje. It is then when the life of Alcatraz is a huge turnaround and begins his true story.

Report: Squad-based 'Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City' detailed in new OXM

As we first heard late last year, Capcom is apparently putting a new twist on the Resident Evil franchise with the help of SOCOM: Confrontation dev Slant Six Games. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a squad based shooter, is reportedly the cover story of Official Xbox Magazine's May 2011 issue.
The issue, which StickSkills claims to have obtained from an unnamed newsstand (pictured above) that routinely sells issues early, supposedly details a game in which players take on the role of Umbrella Corporation special forces on a mission to clean up Raccoon City following the events of Resident Evil 2.

According to the site, the team will have access to "big guns" and employ a number of tricks to fool and manipulate enemies -- human or otherwise. Trying to kill series hero Leon Kennedy is said to factor into the game, with the possibility of friendly forces being deployed to protect him. Operation Raccoon City is reportedly in development for Xbox 360 and PS3, and is scheduled for release this winter.

When contacted, neither Capcom nor OXM could comment on this report. You can see the full cover image, provided by StickSkills, after the break. The issue is scheduled to hit newsstands, officially, on April 5.

Rock Band Weekly: DragonForce, 'Days of Peace' pack

We do love contrast. Next week's Rock Band 3 update will include a downloadable "Days of Peace" pack, featuring patchouli-scented tracks from Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jefferson Airplane and Santana.

Next week's update will also bring a version of the infamous Guitar Hero face-melter "Through the Fire and Flames" to RB3. More importantly, and insanely, you'll be able to purchase a Pro Guitar upgrade for that track. That should take care of any lingering notion you had that you could actually play the guitar.

Gamestop sees 'all-time high' sales of $9.47B for fiscal 2010

GameStop is gonna need a bigger moneybin, as the company reported "all-time high" sales of $9.47 billion for the 2010 fiscal year (ending January 29, 2011), with a record net profit of $408 million. During the fourth quarter, the company also saw a 4.8 percent increase in sales to $3.69 billion, with a 10 percent increase in net earnings to $237.8 million.

During the GameStop investors call, executives stated they would use information on customer purchases extracted from from the PowerUp Rewards program to help determine the 200 locations that will be shut down over the next year due to overlap. It's not all bad news: that same information will be used to open 200 stores "focusing on underserviced markets." GameStop also plans to "pursue opportunistic growth internationally."

The biggest sign that GameStop is doing its best to prepare for the inevitable was the 61 percent increase in "console and PC digital offerings," which brought in $290 million during the year.

NPD: Guitar Hero 3 is this generation's highest-grossing game

Call of Duty: Black Ops might be the best-selling game by unit sales, but it isn't the US bestseller in terms of gross revenue. According to NPD data going back to 1995, and compiled by CNBC, the honor of the highest-grossing game of "this generation" goes to another Activision game, the Axl Rose-angering Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock. Black Ops is #2.

The list of the NPD's top ten best-selling games by revenue (after the break) includes a second Guitar Hero game, too -- R.I.P. -- along with Rock Band and both Wii Fits, which suggests that the best way to make a lot of revenue is simply to make your game cost more. Although Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii are also on the list, so maybe people just really like finding peripherals inside their game boxes, like cereal box prizes.

SCEA transferring 'online services operations, including your wallet and the funds in it' to SNEA on April 1

At CES 2010, Sony's Kaz Hirai -- potential successor to Sir Howard Stringer, if you're just joining us -- introduced "Sony Network Entertainment," a new corporate unit tasked with the expansion of the increasingly vital PlayStation Network architecture. At CES this year, Kaz said 2011 would find Sony "building upon the video, music, game and book offerings on our Qriocity and our PlayStation Network services to deliver a compelling, unique experience for Sony across a wide range of consumer electronic devices."

It looks like part of that plan is in progress now with the introduction of SNEA. Some of you may have received an "important message" from the "PlayStation Network team at Sony Computer Entertainment America" in your inbox today alerting you to a rather troubling change: SCEA is giving all of the money in your online wallet away ...

... to Sony Network Entertainment America! "The first time you sign in to your Sony Online Services account on or after April 1," the important message reads, "you will be asked to enter into a new Terms of Service and User Agreement with SNEA." You can take a peek at that new ToS located conveniently at qriocity.com. (Aside: Isn't it cute when Sony pretends that Qriocity is just as important as PlayStation Network?)

If your relationship with SNEA starts and stops at PlayStation Network, then nothing really changes for you; however, if you're all about Sony's networked services, having a unified wallet and identity will probably be a convenience. Until they tie your PSN tag to your musical tastes. "Hey xxXSmokezMadBluntz420Xxx, how's that new Bieber album?"

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters will shine in 3D

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware -- holy crap! A bunch of missiles and fighter jets just flew right past me! I bet that if someone were watching my every action from an over-the-shoulder perspective on some sort of three-dimensional display unit, that would have looked really, really awesome!" –Green Lantern Vol. 2, #76, 1970

DC Comics and Warner Bros. Interactive have announced that Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is now slated for a release on the 3DS, joining the standard DS and console versions. Additionally, the game -- which drops June 7 and ties into the events of the Green Lantern film (which hits theaters June 17) -- will feature a 3D option on PS3 and 360, provided you own the necessary accoutrements. We can only imagine how rad flying around and shooting stuff out of power rings is going to look in a stereoscopic context.

Grasshopper announcing 'charity app' at streaming event March 30

A Grasshopper Manufacture event originally announced in February will now serve as a charity function following the March 11 earthquake. The "Grasstream 2" event will be held at the Shinjuku Loft Plaza One venue on March 30, with ticket sales going to the Red Cross -- and it will also be streamed on Ustream in both English (thanks to 8-4) and Japanese.

That night, Grasshopper will show a new Shadows of the Damned trailer, accompanied by a talk by Suda 51 and audio director Akira Yamaoka. A new "charity app" will also be introduced on stage by model Kayo Sato and J-pop group Vanilla Beans. "If you own an iPhone or iPad," the announcement notes, "don't forget it!" This segment of the presentation is in the same time slot as the "new game announce" that was originally planned -- and features the same personalities on stage -- suggesting that a new Grasshopper-developed iPhone game is now being adapted for charitable purposes.

In addition, a No More Heroes 2 segment will feature music by Kazutoshi Iida, discussion from artists Yusuke Kozaki and Shigeto Koyama, and a talk by Suda about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which is notably similar in story to No More Heroes.

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls finds a home on PSN

The positively historical first-person RPG series Wizardry will continue in North America and Europe in as modern a manner as can be: a downloadable PSN game for PS3. XSEED is localizing Acquire's Wizardry: Torawareshi Tamashii no Meikyū for the West as Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls. Though the series started in America (in 1981!) in recent years it's been more popular in Japan, with sequels developed by Japanese companies and released only in Japan. That explains why this version looks a bit more anime than the original did.

Players will be able to explore a grid-based dungeon and fight 120 different monsters, all with hand-drawn 2D sprites, sometime this spring. Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls (PS3)

Resident Evil: Revival Selection brings RE4 and Code Veronica to 360, PS3

PFFFFSSSS!
Sorry, but that's the closest onomatopoeia we could come up with for the sound of confetti coming out of a giant cannon. What's the occasion? Why, it's the one millionth port of Resident Evil 4! It's a big honor, and it goes to Biohazard (Resident Evil): Revival Selection, a set of high-definition updates of RE 4 and Code Veronica, that Famitsu says is headed to 360 and PS3. According to Andriasang, the full title may be "Resident Evil Revival Selection HD Remastered Version," and fair warning: If we have to type that out in full every time, we'll never cover this game again.

The updates, which have only been announced for Japan at the moment, will feature RE 4's bonus Ada Wong scenario, "Separate Ways."

Dirk the Daring was unavailable as of press time to comment on the possibility of these upstarts shattering his record. That said, if any STARS agents come up missing, we'll make Singe's belly the first spot we check.

Sony claims George 'Geohot' Hotz is avoiding trial in South America

Sony may have access to pretty much all of PS3 jailbreaker George "GeoHot" Hotz's records, but it doesn't have access to Hotz himself. As unearthed by VGHQ, a legal complaint filed by Sony alleges that Hotz "is now in South America, an excuse for why he will not immediately provide the components of his hard drives." Sony believes that Hotz left with the intention of delaying his ongoing trial.

According to Sony's lawyers, Hotz has been "engaged in a campaign to thwart jurisdictional discovery at every turn" over "the last several weeks" -- including the intentional removal of "integral components of his impounded hard drives," said to contain implicating evidence of Hotz's alleged misdeeds. Apparently, when SCEA discovered that Hotz's HDDs were missing parts, a request for the components was met with a response from Hotz's legal counsel that Hotz "was in South America." One thing's for sure -- if he is in South America somewhere, Hotz's freestyle rap about Sony is no longer the weirdest thing about the story of the PS3 jailbreak.

Shoot Many Robots preview: What it says on the tin

Shoot Many Robots reminds me of classic 2D shooter Metal Slug, but with the addition of leveling and upgrade systems. Or it could be like a linear, 2D version of Borderlands -- beyond exhibiting a similar color palette, SMR's constantly popping out XP numbers and loot notices. Or maybe it's more like Contra, given the steady flood of enemies and enormous mini-bosses.

Okay, let's just call it a mixture of all those things, melded with its own southern-baked main character -- the gaming equivalent of Zombieland's Tallahassee character. That all makes SMR sound pretty derivative -- which it certainly is, to an extent -- but the game's developers show a ton of heart going into the project. Also, tutus. Shoot Many Robots (PSN/XBLA)

Steam Voice chat upgraded with Skype's SILK codec, just in time for Portal 2 co-op

You know communication is of paramount importance while playing Portal 2's co-op mode and, to ameliorate that experience, Valve has upgraded the quality of Steam's voice technology. In place of that busted old junk is the SILK audio codec, the same one developed by (and used in) Skype -- those cats should know a little something about internet-based voice tech. While the older Steam Voice required a steady 15 kbps of bandwidth, SILK dynamically adjusts its bandwidth demands, from 8 to 30 kbps.

During a brief test, we found the audio quality to be a notable improvement from the likes of Xbox Live, PSN, and even Steam Voice, but not quite "Skype-quality." Today's Steam client update brings the new codec, along with some other improvements, exactly one month before Portal 2 will require you to use it. We're hoping Steam users test it out before then, so Valve can iron out any pulls in its SILK stockings before Portal 2 day.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 patch preps for new mode, tweaks fighters

Capcom launched an update for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 earlier today to prepare for the new "Event Mode" that will be added to the game this Friday -- however, the patch has also quietly introduced a few balance changes to some characters' intricately measured statistics. The most drastic is a reduction in Sentinel's health, which has been dropped from 1.3 million tiny units (the most health of any fighter in the game) to 905,000, according to Shoryuken.

The patch also nixes a few fairly unfair loops belonging to Spencer, Akuma and Haggar. Hey, why not remove their grappling hook, forbidden demonic Kung-Fu and impossibly gigantic muscles while you're at it? Those seem pretty unfair, too.

"We want to thank all the fans around the world for your continued support -- it has made Super Stardust HD a top-selling PSN-exclusive and enabled us to keep creating new content for the game even now over three years after its release," wrote Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of developer Housemarque, in the DLC announcement on the EU PlayStation Blog.

Making its debut in Super Stardust Portable for PSP, Impact Mode does away with weapons and outfits your ship with "an experimental new matter-to-energy boost engine technology" -- in other words, "once you activate the boost, you can stay in boost as long as you can hit meteors and enemies with it!"

The mode will be available for Super Stardust HD on March 30 (in the EU PlayStation Store) for €1.99/£1.59. The exact release date ("Spring," for now) and price for the North American release are pending.

Counting Angry Birds before they hatch: dev talks US IPO, analysts need track record

Angry Birds developer Rovio has been on a roll: raking in millions of unit sales, breaking through to the mainstream and recently receiving another $42 million from investors. Now the company is talking about going public on the Nasdaq with an IPO in the next five years.

"At an estimated value of nearly $300 million, it would still be considered a relatively small company," EEDAR's Jesse Divnich explained when we asked about the company's chances. "Gameloft, for example has a current market cap of $344 million (the cost for someone to own every share of the company), this is compared to Activsion which has a market valuation of over $12 billion, and Google at $185 billion. In fact, most large mutual funds typically don't invest in anything with a market cap under $1 billion. If they do, they typically classify them as 'high-risk' or 'aggressive plays.'"

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter had similar reservations about the company telling Joystiq, "Any company can go public, but the rule of thumb is that the company has at least $50 million of annual revenue before they try to sell stock. That revenue has to be recurring, and I think that is an obstacle for Rovio, which so far is a one-hit wonder. If they can replicate what they've done with Angry Birds, there might be some interest."

Pachter also mentioned that the administrative costs of being public is about $5 million annually, which is why small companies don't usually take the stock route.

Kinect PS3 hack is a console purist's worst nightmare

In the video past the break, you can see the first small steps for man that is Killzone 3 being played with Kinect. Yes, that is a sentence we never thought we'd have to write.

It's still a bit rough around the edges (a self-professed "pre-Alpha" build of the software), but the progress that Goel claims to have made is quite impressive to behold. It could be faked, but all signs point to this being a legitimate, working Kinect hack, using Kinect PC drivers and software that allows the PS3 to use PC controllers. Indies react: PAX East as a showcase for small studios

Like so many PAX shows before it, this year's PAX East showcased a ton of indie games -- the gaming equivalent of a Williamsburg dubstep show, if you will. In our experience at this year's event, larger industry players like EA and Bethesda showed off their titles with hired hands and private theater viewings, choosing to exhibit older demos rather than new content.

The indies and smaller studios, on the other hand, were out in force. Beyond bringing playable versions of their games to the show -- even Fez was playable, for the first time in several years of development -- the indie studios brought themselves. They continued the tradition of directly engaging with attendees and, often, solicited game-testing feedback on the fly.

"I approached PAX East as a three-day playtest session. I learned so much about what works and what doesn't just from standing in the back and observing how people played the game," Fez co-developer Phil Fish told Joystiq. "It's also an amazing morale boost to be told by so many people that your game is great."

The 838MB demo features Ultimate Warrior as a "Brawler" and Rey Mysterio as an "Acrobat," two of the four character classes in the game. Brawlers are the balanced class, while the Acrobat class is fast and flies through the air, springing off ropes. Go check it out ... you wouldn't want to Miz out on all the action.

Analysts weigh in on Homefront's potential profitability

Homefront has had an interesting ride so far. Touted as THQ's most pre-ordered game in company history, it debuted to middling reviews (ours included), which seemingly triggered a massive decline in THQ's stock price. Still, despite reviews, THQ announced over 375,000 units in first day sales. It's also worth noting that both Amazon and Walmart knocked $20 off Homefront the day after it released, which probably aided sales as well.

Whether or not Homefront proves profitable for THQ, well, that's where analysts come in! Speaking to Benzinga, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter noted that THQ would need to move two million units to break even. In light of the need to move in excess of two million to yield a profit, Pachter called day one sales "a disappointing start," adding that poor reviews could lead to stagnating sales moving forward. That said, Pachter does expect the title to at least break even.

Bradley Safalow of PAA Research pins Homefront's low review scores on its short single-player campaign. Had the campaign been two to three hours longer, said Safalow, "then it could have achieved a Metacritic of 80." Safalow believes Homefront could bring in a "modest profit" for THQ, though he has much higher hopes for Saints Row: The Third.

Finally, Wall Street Strategies' Brian Sozzi expects Homefront to meet THQ's overall sales goals with the help of downloadable content. Like Safalow, Sozzi's firm is also "optimistic" regarding Saints Row: The Third and Red Faction: Armageddon.

'Fiv5' could be the title of Quantic Dreams' next game

David Cage, director of the soggy serial killer interactive drama Heavy Rain, has already said there won't be a sequel to that game, telling the PlayStation Blog, "We're going to be exploring a different direction, which will still be very dark and still for adults, but completely different to Heavy Rain" for Quantic Dreams' next project. That game's specifics may be a secret, but it may have a title: "Fiv5" ... yes, in the style of David Fincher's film Se7en.

Gaming trademark sleuth superannuation has turned up several clues supporting this theory, including a trademark filing with Europe's Office of Harmonization for the International Market. There's also a domain name registration by Quantic Dream, and a new hire at the developer has listed themselves as "Concept Artist: Video Game "FIVE" & "INFRAWORLD" on LinkedIn. Infraworld? Where'd we put our deerstalker hat and magnifying glass? Via:

Dead Space movie still in production, Caruso toyed around with 'a prequel'

Back in 2009, D.J. Caruso signed on to direct Dead Space. Since then, we haven't heard much about the project -- a piece here; a small morsel there. An interview with AreaGames during a German press tour for I Am Number Four, Caruso's latest film, brings news that a big-screen adaptation of Dead Space is still very alive.

"We're working on the story," Caruso said in the video interview, which you can see for yourself just past the break. "We had one attempt of trying to do a prequel, but the story didn't quite work out as well as we wanted it to. But if we can capture how -- I don't want to say, I guess, how scary or horrifying it would be to play that game because it's really, really fantastic. It'd be fun to make that into a movie." And we wouldn't mind seeing it, granted none of those crazy-scary Necromorph children from Dead Space 2 make their way into the film.

Fast-forward to 1:26 for the Dead Space talk.

Heavy Rain director encourages more 'personal' stories

Speaking to The Guardian about storytelling in games, Heavy Rain director Cage singled out the FPS genre -- its use of WWII and sci-fi settings in general -- as an example where that aspect of the medium is stagnating. His advice for other game writers: "Don't write about being a rookie soldier in WWII, because you don't have a clue what that's like."

Heavy Rain has drawn accolades, Cage says, because the inspiration for its story is personal and relatable."Talk about yourself, your life, your emotions, the people around you, what you like, what you hate," he advised. "This is how the industry will make a huge step forward. I'm fed up with space marines."

In his case, inspiration came from something much more down to earth. "It was not about space marines fighting aliens, it was about my relationship with my first son and how he changed my life –- and also about how loving someone without expecting anything in return was something totally new."

So, Modern Warfare 3 writers: instead of "how many people can you shoot?," why not try asking players "how many people would you shoot to save someone you love?"

2K Sports working vigorously to eliminate sexy Top Spin 4 ad featuring Serena Williams

An advertisement for Top Spin 4 has made its way onto the internet, but it's not what one would call "official." Featuring Serena Williams, the ad was definitely made with 2K Sports' money and effort. We've attempted to get an official statement from 2K Sports, but the company doesn't appear to want to talk until it's eliminated every instance of the video from the internet.

The video was originally posted by the actress featured in the commercial after she clearly didn't appreciate 2K Sports not releasing it.

Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess was almost The Waterfall of the Dirty Gods

On Gamasutra, Mediatonic's Jim Griffiths and Paul Croft wrote a postmortem for Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, the amusingly-named jumping vampire game that started on PlayStation Minis before, yes, hopping to Xbox Live Indie Games.

When the game was first conceived, there wasn't even the faint possibility of monsters having stolen any princesses. "The Waterfall of the Dirty Gods was our original concept pitch," the developers explained, "where the player needed to climb to the top of several different waterfalls and ring their bell to stop the gods from washing their filthy bodies in the water and polluting the waterfall." The player controlled a monkey with a bell that could be used as a grappling hook.

Once the concept was in place, the team prototyped in Flash while simultaneously building the PSP game. After its launch, Mediatonic decided to rebuild it in XNA for release on the Indie Games platform.

"A big benefit of doing a 360 version is that we could use HD assets and remain within the file footprint restriction, making it the "prettiest" version, Griffiths and Croft said. "Ultimately, though, the prime reason for the 360 version was simple curiosity in adding another platform to our portfolio." And now you (probably) know the rest of the story!

Homefront invades UK charts

THQ's Homefront blitzed the UK's wallets last week, taking the top spot on Chart-Track's all formats chart. According to Chart-Track data obtained by Eurogamer, format purchasing for the new IP was quite lopsided, with 70 percent of total retail Homefront sales being on Xbox 360, 26 percent on PS3 and the four percent remainder (which does not include digital distribution) on PC. Due to the invasion the prior week's top two, Dragon Age 2 and Pokemon White, slipped down one spot each, leaving BioWare's well-received RPG in second place.

Beyond Homefront, the UK saw several solid premieres last week. PC-exclusive Total War: Shogun 2 found an honorable place in fourth, while multiplatform tennis sim Top Spin 4 just missed out on the top ten in the 12th spot. Taking a trip further down the list, we find Yakuza 4 debuting at number 25.

Legend of Mana hits PSOne Classics this week

Somehow, Square Enix seems to have been convinced to actually release its old games on PSOne Classics. Last week's Parasite Eve is being followed with another gem out of the company's back catalog this week: Legend of Mana.

The sidequest-heavy, somewhat open-ended Legend, which allows players to use "Artifacts" to create and then explore in-game areas, may not have been as well-received as the SNES's Secret of Mana, but it's certainly not a bad game either. And it's much better suited for PSOne Classics release anyway, since it was a PlayStation game.

Captain America: Super Soldier taking aim at July release date

With the Captain America film hitting theaters on July 22, it makes a lot of sense that the game will arrive around the same time -- July 19, actually, as revealed this morning by Sega. Alongside the new release date, Sega handed over several new screens of the Captain in action on Xbox 360/PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, and Wii.

There's also the totally sweet shot of Cap hanging out in an airplane -- straight chillin' -- as seen above. You just know that any second he's gonna totally flip out. Aaaaany second now ... Captain America: Super Soldier (360/PS3/Wii/DS, 3/21/11)

Crysis 2, Dungeon Siege 3 comics in the works

Can't be bothered to actually play a game, but want something a little more visual than novels? You're in luck. First up, Crysis 2 is getting its own comic, thanks to publisher IDW. The six-issue series, written by Richard K. Morgan (who also penned the story in the game) and drawn by Peter Bergting, connects the events of Crysis and Crysis 2. It arrives in June.

Next, Square Enix is working with Dark Horse Comics to release a digital Dungeon Siege 3 comic online. The book will appear on the official Dungeon Siege site, with writer Jeremy Barlow, along with artists Iban Coello and Sergio Abad, telling three tales of the kingdom of Ehb. Yet another comic will be packaged with the game itself at Walmart when it arrives on May 31.

Crysis 2 demo for PS3 gone in a flash

Amid ongoing connectivity problems, EA and Crytek have pulled the plug on the PS3 multiplayer demo for Crysis 2 just three days after it arrived on the PlayStation Store. "Though many gamers have had a great experience playing the demo, we are aware that others have been experiencing server connection delays," a statement on EA's forums reads.

The publisher explains that the swift demise of the demo is intended to give Crytek time to "ensure all issues are resolved when the game launches next week." This isn't the first time EA has yanked a Crysis 2 multiplayer demo -- the original Xbox 360 version was pulled due to similar issues and later replaced with an updated release.

MotorStorm Apocalypse delayed indefinitely in North America

Sony has put the brakes on the North American release of MotorStorm Apocalypse, delaying the game indefinitely in the wake of last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The delay, announced on the PlayStation Blog, doesn't exactly come as a surprise, given that the title's launch had previously been postponed in Japan and the UK.

Set in an earthquake-ravaged costal city, the Evolution Studios developed racer had been scheduled for release on April 12. Sony told Joystiq earlier this week that the date still stood. When contacted today, SCEA confirmed the delay and added that there is "no new date at the moment."

Back to the Future Episode 2 travels to PSN on March 29

Time is finally catching up for the PlayStation Network installments of Telltale's Back to the Future games. While the first episode arrived eight weeks after its PC- and Mac-based counterpart, the second episode -- dubbed "Get Tannen!" -- is due for digi-release on March 29, just under six weeks later. If this pattern keeps up, we expect to see each subsequent PSN-bound installment arrive two weeks closer to the initial computer release; with five episodes, that means the fifth release should be simultaneous.

Right? Back to the Future (Get Tannen!)

Into The Pixel 2011 submissions accepted until April 15

Artists are currently welcome to submit pieces for consideration for the Into The Pixel 2011 exhibit. The latest works for the digital game art exhibition, now in its eighth year, will debut at a little shindig called E3 in June. Submissions are open now and will close on April 15.

The 2010 collection had 200 submissions, with 20 works selected for the gallery, which also travels to other locales throughout the year. All selected pieces of art are printed out by a "master printer," then professionally framed. It's admittedly far cooler than printing out your work on a BubbleJet and sticking it on your wall with Blu-Tack.

PlayStation Move creator suggests Sony won't abandon traditional controllers

The chances that the PlayStation 4 will ship with a Move-like motion controller instead of traditional gamepad got a little slimmer, thanks to an interview with Sony R&D wizard Dr. Richard Marks. "I said that pretty much from the beginning that we're not trying to get rid of the gamepad," he told Gamasutra, saying of the idea that Sony might go motion-only for PS4: "I don't think that makes sense."

"The gamepad is a really good abstract device," Marks explained. "It can map to so many different things. It doesn't map one-to-one to those things, but it doesn't need to for a lot of game experiences."

Of course, Marks is no doubt tinkering on some future iteration of the Move technology, but there's one gameplay interface he apparently has no interest in exploring: brain waves. "I think the brain interface thing is too far," he admitted when the topic was broached. "When you play some of the experiences like Rock Band where you break into a sweat playing the drums, those things are good. I like those things. I don't want to remove all of that." S

Thor and Captain America to avenge in 3D on PS3, Xbox and (of course) 3DS

Sega is showing the Thor and Captain America games at an event for both Marvel properties, and is also tweeting news snippets out of said event. First off, games based on both Marvel movies will be released on 3DS.

Second -- and this dovetails nicely -- the Xbox and PS3 versions will also be playable in 3D. No word yet about whether this will require a 3D television or if it'll be something like TriOviz that works on everything. Thor is currently slated for a May 11 release, with Captain America following sometime this summer.

LA Noire preview: Perceptive policeman

I've had murder on my mind for the last couple of days. A woman, seemingly cut down in the prime of her life, laid dead and naked on a bluff on the outskirts of LA. She died of blunt trama to the head, her murderer striking her head in the dead of night with what looked like a pipe. The only witness was an ominous full moon.

I know this because I watched her murder, only briefly, before LA homicide's newest member, detective Cole Phelps, was assigned the case: The Red Lipstick Murder. Phelps may be new to the murder beat, but his skills of detection are unparalleled, both at the crime scene and when interrogating persons of interest.

Sure, it was odd to see him put his hands all over the body, twisting it and analyzing it for clues: a bruise here; a missing wedding ring there; a nearby size 8 man's boot print. Modern detective shows have taught us that touching any evidence is a big no-no, but in 1947, it was the norm -- at least, LA Noire says as much. After stomping around the scene of this gruesome murder, Phelps walks away with a lighter from the Bamba Club and a cause of murder. Odd, since I could've just told him how she died, if only he asked me.

Sony granted access to GeoHot's PayPal records

A federal magistrate has authorized Sony to subpoena PayPal for information about California-based funds sent to accounts associated with PS3 jailbreaker George "GeoHot" Hotz, reports Wired's Threat Level blog. The US District Court ruling in San Francisco is the latest development in a jurisdiction dispute to decide whether Sony can proceed with its lawsuit against Hotz in California or must instead do so in Hotz's home state of New Jersey.

Sony alleges that Hotz received donations for his PS3 hack from Northern California residents (via PayPal), and, if true, the evidence could bolster Sony's case to keep the case in San Francisco court. In a court order, Magistrate Joseph Spero defined the "limited information" that PayPal could be ordered to present as "documents sufficient to identify the source of funds in California that went into any PayPal account associated with geohot

Valve making Portal 2 ads on its own

Who knows how to communicate Portal 2's gameplay and tone better than Valve? Certainly not some ad agency, the company is asserting. Marketing VP Doug Lombardi told MCV that the company is going in-house for its Portal 2 ads, not just because it knows the material, but because it's easier to tinker that way.

"With the Portal 2 ad," Lombardi said, "we playtested it and were able to make changes during production. With an agency, those types of tests are too often left to a post-mortem – at which point, the value of those realisations is pretty close to worthless."

It's solid advice for anyone with the money lying about to create its own ad division. And good news for people who like to see actually funny things on TV.

Hans Zimmer puts light touch on Crysis 2 score

While you might not recognize, let alone be able to pronounce, the names behind the Crysis 2 score -- Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu, anyone? -- EA's got one that might ring a bell: Hans Zimmer.

The Hans has contributed "part of the dramatic score" for Crytek's sequel, the publisher announced today, squeezing in one last plug before the game and soundtrack are released next week. You can sample the introductory track in the audio clip below -- or do it the right way: Wait until next week when you can get the full soundtrack on your iPod, squeeze into a body suit and go bounding up 5th Avenue.

EA and Crytek have teamed up with legendary composer Hans Zimmer, who created part of the dramatic score for the critically acclaimed first-person shooter Crysis 2, which has already earned Editor's Choice awards and a 9/10 from both Official Xbox Magazine (UK) and PC Action (Germany). Recognized worldwide for his work on blockbuster films like "Inception" and "The Dark Knight," Zimmer and his team featuring Lorne Balfe worked with the existing composers Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu to create the intense and dramatic score for Crysis 2 which sets the tone for the game's backdrop of a devastated New York City in 2023.

Gamers can hear the soundtrack when Crysis 2 hits stores on March 22 in North America or by downloading the Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo, which debuts today on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system in North America and tomorrow in Europe. The soundtrack will also be available for download on iTunes, Amazon and other music retailers on March 22nd. Fans can preview the intro of the soundtrack at http://soundcloud.com/nettwerkmusicgroup/hans-zimmer-crysis-2-intro.

"I was drawn to Crysis 2 because of Crytek's passion for the project and the world they created," said Hans Zimmer. "And I am very happy with the outcome of our collaboration."

Gamers who pre-order Crysis 2 today will receive an automatic upgrade at no additional cost to the Crysis 2 Limited Edition

Ubisoft survey gauges interest in Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon films

A survey floating around seems to suggest Ubisoft is entertaining the idea of bringing some of its franchises over to the big screen -- specifically, Assassin's Creed and Ghost Recon. The above image was submitted to Evil Avatar, which says the survey is geared the toward finding out what would most make those taking it want to see movies based on the franchises -- Ezio, Subject 16 and the like.

While we feel the world would probably be just fine without another war flick, we'd be all for an Assassin's Creed movie, granted that the project wasn't entirely about making money but also making a good movie. We're probably being a bit naive, though.

What's in a Name: EA2D

Mark Spenner is the vice president and general manager of Electronic Arts' EA2D studio, which makes smaller games with smaller teams. It's just launched Dragon Age Legends on Facebook and is working on an XBLA/PSN version of the Flash hit The Fancy Pants Adventures. Spenner elucidated the meaning of the studio's name in a conversation with Joystiq at South by Southwest Interactive:

"A lot of people think 'EA2D' is about graphics, because obviously the '2D,' but the inspiration was: We wanted to get back to small teams, core gameplay. We had this manifesto at EA when it was founded, all about that -- and about making people cry through video games. So very player-focused; 'back to our roots' gameplay; and then not worry so much about the number of pixels we're pushing onto the screen.

"So that was the genesis of the name, and then some fabulous people at EA did this logo for us, which captured the spirit perfectly."

Dragon Age Legends is playable on Facebook. Fancy Pants Adventures is due on XBLA and PSN this spring.
